Fuel Shortage Crisis Hits Blantyre, Malawi, Causing Disruptions

 

In a recent turn of events, Blantyre, the second-largest city in Malawi, is grappling with a severe fuel shortage, causing widespread disruptions across the region. Local residents are facing long queues at gas stations as fuel supplies have dwindled to critically low levels. The scarcity of fuel has led to transportation challenges, impacting businesses and daily life.

Education at a crossroad: MUBAS students face hurdles in registration for second semester due to unpaid fees

 

As the mid semester exams draws to a close, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences(MUBAS) is opening up of commencement of its second semester Student Management Information System(SMIS) registration, set to begin next week.

According to university registrar, Lloyd Kambwiri, SMIS registration will start on Monday, 14th august to 28th august same month.

She says, “SMIS registration will start next week, and only students who have already paid three quarters of the applicable fees will be allowed to register through SMIS.”

“Students who will fail to register within the specified period will have their place reserved for the next academic year.”

However, economic problems including poverty and natural disaster such as cyclone Freddy has affects a lot public students  in the country, has also affects students too since a lot of students in public universities in are failing to source money for their tuition fee.

 

One of the student who prefer to remain anonymous, stated, ‘it’s dishearten to encounter such roadblocks when we are eager to our education journey. The registration process should be seamless, but the financial aspects has become a significant hurdle for many of us.”

Administration are aware of the concerns raised by the students and is actively addressing the issue. In response to mounting complaints, the university registrar acknowledged, “we understand the challenges and we are working diligently to find a solution that ensures every student can access their courses without undue obstacles.”

Maravi posts indicates that about 10-20% of public university are struggling each and every year to find fees and some unnecessary, this led to withdraw of some students from their courses.  In 2018, Polytechnic Registrar Moses Mwenye said last academic year, about 76 students asked to have their places reserved because of lack of fees.
